    Marc Garneau

    Marc Garneau, CC, astronaut, military officer, engineer, politician (born 23 February 1949 in Québec City, QC). Garneau has distinguished himself in three distinct fields. As a naval officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, he spent 10 years as a combat systems engineer. In 1984, Garneau became the first Canadian astronaut to go to space and, from 2001 to 2005, was president of the Canadian Space Agency. As a federal politician, he has served as Liberal house leader, minister of transport and minister of foreign affairs.

    Martha Salcudean

    Martha Eva Salcudean (née Abel), OC, OBC, professor of mechanical engineering (born 26 February 1934 in Cluj, Romania; died 17 July 2019 in British Columbia). Salcudean was a leading authority on computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. In 1985, she was named chair of the department of mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia. This made her the first female head of a Canadian university’s engineering department. Salcudean dedicated much of her academic career to forging research and development partnerships. She fostered collaboration between universities, government agencies and industry groups in sectors such as mining, pulp and paper and aeronautics.

    Robert Thirsk

    Robert (Bob) Brent Thirsk, OC, OBC, engineer, astronaut (born 17 August 1953 in New Westminster, BC). In 1983, Robert Thirsk was one of six Canadians selected by the National Research Council to join the Canadian astronaut corps (see Canadian Space Agency). In 2009, he became the first Canadian astronaut to take part in a long-duration mission while on-board the International Space Station (ISS). In addition to his career as an astronaut, Thirsk has served as Vice-President of Public, Government and Institute Affairs for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2012-14) and was the University of Calgary’s 13th chancellor.

    Roland Galarneau

    Roland Galarneau, CM, machinist and inventor (born 16 February 1922 in Hull, Quebec; died 22 May 2011 in Hull). In the late 1960s, Galarneau invented the Converto-Braille, a computerized printer capable of transcribing text into Braille at 100 words per minute. This was a landmark innovation for people with visual impairments, as it increased their access to textbooks and other written information. Galarneau developed faster versions of the Converto-Braille in the 1970s. The company he founded eventually adapted the machine into software for IBM computers in the 1980s. This software was a precursor of the Braille software used today.
