Robert Donald Hoskin Heard, chemist, biochemist (born 13 February 1908 in St. Thomas, ON; died 8 September 1957 in Montreal, QC). Well known for research on the biochemistry of steroid hormones, Heard was largely responsible for the 1944 choice of a Canadian site for the annual prestigious Laurentian Hormone Conference.

Robert Foulis, inventor, civil engineer, painter (born 5 May 1796 in Glasgow, Scotland; died 26 January 1866 in Saint John, NB). Robert Foulis is known as the inventor of the world’s first steam-operated fog alarm, which was installed on Partridge Island in 1859. While Foulis never patented or even profited from his life-saving innovation, his invention assisted fogbound mariners for over a century.

Coats was the first Dominion statistician of Canada (see Statistics Canada). He spent 24 years as the country’s chief statistician.
